The long-awaited President George Turnpike East Branch is moving towards completion of the necessary environmental study. A public meeting will be held September 4th, 2025 from 5:30 to 7:30PM at the Mesquite Convention Center (1750 Rodeo Dr., Mesquite). I don’t see a posted agenda for the meeting, but based on pictures in the flyer, there will be tables with maps of the potential highway options, and an opportunity to submit public comments on the options.

The project has been in development off and on since the 1960s. In 2011 the Town of Sunnyvale had requested time and offered their opinion on a preferred alignment for the highway, so our town has already given some serious input to this project. In fact, the Town of Sunnyvale created the “SH 190 Advisory Committee” in 2011, met 11 times along with a professional land use planner, and ultimately gave a recommendation for “Alternative 2” of the highway proposal. The comprehensive study of alternatives from 2024 is available here. On page 20, the study includes Sunnyvale’s history of involvement withe highway plan. It’s not likely that our input at this meeting will seriously affect the placement of the highway, but if you live nearby there will probably be some useful information.

This highway is going to connect US 30 and 20, and hug the East side of town. There don’t appear to be a lot of options for where the Sunnyvale portion of the highway will go. It’s also probably too early to see what eminent domain decisions will be made for property owners nearby.

Alternatives 1 and 2 diverge near Town East Blvd & Lake Ray Hubbard

Additional information about the 11 mile highway project is here: https://www.ntta.org/president-george-bush-turnpike-pgbt#:~:text=President%20George%20Bush%20Turnpike%20East%20Branch&text=The%20Texas%20Department%20of%20Transportation,alignment%20for%20the%20future%20extension.
